The New Kid
Hi Everyone! Welcome back to my blog!
We just started school this week (I know, it’s too early, right?) and we got a new kid in school yesterday, and he’s a little weird. Our teacher, Miss McNally introduced him and told us his name is Carter (I thought that was only a last name?). She said he and his mom just moved here and to invite him into the class.
Carter came in and sat down next to me and I immediately asked him how he was doing. I like meeting new people and I wanted to have as many friends as I could so I tried to talk to him. I don’t think he wanted to be my friend though!
He just said he was OK and pulled three pencils out of his backpack and spent a few minutes lining them up on the desk. The whole period he sat there and took notes and never stopped paying attention. I tried throwing notes at him, I tried whispering to him (which Miss McNally heard and told me not to distract everyone…crap), I tried everything! Every time, he would just look over and give me a smile (though it looked like it hurt him to smile!), then he would go back to paying attention to the lesson.
I was really upset. Why was he being so rude! I was trying to get his attention and trying to be nice to him, because, you know, the new kid and all, but he was ignoring me! I decided I wasn’t going to talk to him anymore. If he was going to be that rude, then he could be someone else’s friend.
Then Miss McNally excused the class and he turned to me and held out his hand to shake. I think I made a face at him, but I shook his hand.
He said, “Sorry, I didn’t want to be rude and interrupt Miss McNally. My name is Carter. Pleased to meet you.”
“Oh,” I said. “My Name is Elsie.”
He wasn’t ignoring me. He just was being respectful to Miss McNally, and I hadn’t been! I was the rude one! Miss McNally even had to tell me to be quiet! Oh man I was so embarrassed! He packed up his pencils and notebooks before I could say anything back to him, but I think I’m going to try and talk to him before class when I go in. Strange how I thought he was the rude one, but it was really me.
Anyway, I have to go or I’ll be late for school!
Here I go!
